When we are asked what is one of the most exciting and fun nature experiences on the island for individuals, couples and families. Hands down, we have to say the
Tarpon Bay Explorers outfit at the end of Tarpon Bay Road is the ultimate Sanibel adventure company! This eco-business is located at the edge of Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and enjoys unique access to the park itself.  There are endless things to do for young and old alike, from the Touch Tank Experience to guided tours, a breakfast boat outing, evening cruises, you name it they can provide it.

Two of the most interesting tours that they serve up to both locals and visitors alike are the Kayak Trail Tour and the Standup  Paddleboard Tour.

The Kayak Trail Tour offers you a unique experience in that  a guide will take you out through the mangrove forest just off Tarpon Bay and bring you to whatever is actually happening that particular day.  Whether it be a nest sighting or a group of manatee.  You will be taken by a trained naturalist through a quiet magical world of the red mangrove.  After the tour you are invited to keep your kayak for the rest of the day to tour the Bay and enjoy your time how you wish!  Mangroves are an integral part of our coastal area.  These “forests” which are really underwater provide an estuary for fish and other creatures and also provide protection from the ravishes of hurricanes as well.

The second tour truly is becoming one of the most popular ones in our area. Standup Paddleboarding is the latest craze and Tarpon Bay offers this fabulous fun activity up for all. No matter your skill level, all are welcome to a guided tour with a naturalist via paddleboard through the mangroves searching out the abundant natural activity. Many may not know it but paddleboarding has been around for at least 3000 years.  It’s origins are disputed, but you they have been documented back the Chan Chan civilization in Peru where the “cabalitos de totora” which means little horses made of reed were used as watercraft by the fisherman of the area.
